THE EVOLUTION OF BEATDOWN

ORIGINS

Over the years of the existence of the game, there have been many styles of play and they have evolved over time to what they are today as you would expect of anything. styles can range from the aggressive to the passive from attacking to defending. and this week we are going to look at the style of play that i have alot of experience with, which is beatdown.

when the game first started, the attack power of easily summonable monsters was quite low, which ment that the best beatdown monsters that were available were lajinn the mystical gene of the lamp which sported a lvl 4 and 1800 attack points, and summoned skull, which was a one tribute 2500 and for a long time the strongest one tribute monster available in the game. many people would talk about the blue eyes white dragon here, its powerful engine of destruction is legendary. and its responsible for basically capping the base attack points on almost every other monster in the game. see the rule of 3000 (basically meaning without effects or some strange summoning condition no monster can be stronger then 3000 atk at a base attack).

THE CHAOS/YATA ERA

As the game continued to grow in popularity we saw monsters that were stronger and stronger come out, the term for this is known as power creep. but this lead to the evolution of beatdown decks, it made it so there were lvl 4 monsters with 1900 atk like the gemini elf, mad dog of darkness etc. and even lvl 4s with 2000 atk! like the berserk gorilla. so that was one direction you could take your beatdown deck. another direction was the tribute route. which basically ment running "floaters" in your deck such as mystic tomato, giant rat, nimble momonga, and giant germ. and then you would tribute those "floater" monsters and summon more powerful ones such as summoned skull, dark driceratops, and dark ruler hades which sported 2450 atk points (which got over many other one tribute monsters at the time because they were usually only 2400 atk). and this was also the dawn of chaos monsters, which could be used in beatdown decks and often were, but there main purpose was control decks, and also there were extra deck abuse decks which focused on summoning fusion monsters via magical scientist and other cards along those lines and beating your opponent down with those, which IMO was the first real AGGRO deck (which is a branch off of beatdown) aggro stands for agressive, and its a seperate style to beatdown because instead of constant agression such as beatdown, it starts as a control styled and then swing for massive damage when the time is right.

THE GX ERA

so time again went on, and the game evolved further. we then got into the "gx" era and more emphisis was placed on fusion decks then ever before, the beatdown/aggro decks were givin resourses such as the elemental heroes and the cyber dragon archetypes. and fusion was givin more support itsself so it was made more of a viable deck type compared to what it was in the past. but this is also were beatdown as a deck type fell further from the meta and control took more of a center stage spot via cyber monarch control decks, which was control/aggro due to control via the monarchs and then aggro due to summoning cyber twin dragon and going for quick finishes. in this particular era of dueling there really wasnt a true beatdown deck that was present in competitive play.

INTO THE 5DS ERA

monarchs, then glad beasts, DAD varients, and lightsworns dominated the GX era. all control based decks. did we see the demise of beatdown? well sort of. that is until the 5ds era came around. sure with the invention of synchros every type of deck got stronger, beatdown included. but we also saw beatdown fall further from competitive play due to the inovation of tele-dad and other control decks of its type. so beatdown in itsself became synchro spam decks. were you could play agressivly and swing for massive damage. and as time went on throughout the synchro era we saw deck types like big psychic decks, x sabers(which also doubled as control), and then plants dominate as our beatdown options for competitive play. as lonefire blossum and gigaplant were used to create huge attack point and field advantage over your opponents and beat them into submission. we also saw zombie swarm decks come into play here, which allways had potential as beatdown decks due to call of the mummy decks. but plaguespreader zombie, mezuki, and zombie master were there to ass to the consistancy of zombie decks and move them away from being a beatdown deck into an aggro deck. which then increased there popularity within competitive play. some things were limited, some things were proven too powerful and forbidden. and deck after deck had taken over top tier, examples seeing the demise of gladbeasts, blackwings, x-sabers, and then finally plant synchro. and after the limited list hit all of those decks and basically took them out of play we came into the "zexal" era or the era of XYZ monsters.

THE ZEXAL/XYZ ERA

Which is were we stand today. in which we do not see a beatdown deck in competitive play. with limits on the best tuners in the game effecting how viable synchro decks are in play it proved that beatdown was further dying out as a deck type. all of the big decks of today are control decks. which now makes beatdown as a style only fit for
non-competitive play at the local level. from a promising beginning to losing its luster to aggro/control decks beatdown will allways be one of the big few styles of play that paved the way for our game to evolve into what it is. from humble beginnings in lajinn and summoned skull, to the synchro era of red dragon archfiend and junk warrior. beatdown will allways be a style of play in yugioh. may not be the best for winning games, but in my opinion, it is the best for entertainment. and that is what this game is all about.

hope you enjoyed my article on the evolution of beatdown decks throughout competitive play. dont be afraid to comment, and discuss. because beatdown will be back, its only a matter of time before someone innovates the next great beatdown deck of the zexal era. until then, this has been GaryRulez and now im signing off eh. -GaryRulez
